EDG_3D_TRG
This intermediate 2-day course focuses on 3D contour milling applications, also called surface machining. 3D contour geometries require advanced 3D milling toolpath to thoroughly machine the model and provide acceptable surface finish quality. These applications require a different approach from feature-based machining and techniques typically associated with prismatic milling.
Students will learn the mindset for 3D machining and how to use EDGECAM’s suite of 3D mill toolpaths. Material is designed for a learning program where knowledgeable instructors lead students through an effective progressive learning plan and share best-practice techniques for 3D contour machining. Core concepts are woven throughout the course, allowing students to learn through repetition using practical applications that have similar geometry and challenges to production parts.
The course includes the following topics:
- Efficient Part Roughing.
- Roughing cycle options helpful in 3D machining
- Stock influence on Roughing and use of In-Process Stock
- Rest Roughing
- Automatic Fixture Avoidance
- Effective use of limiters including boundaries, depth ranges, contact angles, feature caps, solid bodies (stage models) and check surfaces
- ALL 3D machining cycles are covered, using practical examples showcasing toolpath solutions for common part geometries!
- Parallel Lace, Profiling and Flat Land Finishing cycles (available starting with EDGECAM Standard Milling / Turning / Production system)
- Flow Surface, Pencil Mill and all Project cycles (available starting with EDGECAM Advanced Milling / Turning / Production system)
- Constant Cusp Finishing and Rest Finishing cycles, and all specialty options in other 3D machining cycles (available in EDGECAM Ultimate Milling / Turning / Production system)
- Understanding lead and link moves
- Geometry selection for 3D machining
- Tips on model preparation and part organization
Pre-Requisites
- Successful completion of EDGECAM Prismatic Milling Fundamentals course, with at least 6 production jobs completed.
- This is an intermediate level course. Students are expected to have practical working knowledge of modern EDGECAM software. Exceptions can be made, with prior approval of the course instructor. If you have questions about your software proficiency relevant to this course, please reach out to your Hexagon account manager to discuss.
- Proficient with Microsoft Windows.
- If you have registered for a class hosted in a Hexagon training lab, each student is provided with an EDGECAM workstation and all files used in class.
- If you have registered for web-based training, students will use their workstation which must have EDGECAM 2024.1 version or newer installed and licensed prior to attending training. The Sample ToolStore database that is installed with EDGECAM will be used for the course. Student workstations should also have reliable high speed internet connection and microphone/speakers or phone for audio. Dual monitors are strongly recommended.
